Phyllis Gaines has had success as a singer, dancer, and actress. Earning a degree in Fine Arts Theatre from Ramapo College in NJ, using her talents to sing in New York and a featured entertainer on cruise ships.  Having also studied at the New York School of American Sign Language Institute, she was featured with her signing skills in the Spanish music video for MTV, “La Gente” by Jose Alberto.  

Phyllis continued her education and earned a Master of Science degree at Gallaudet University, the worlds only liberal arts school for the Deaf.

Phyllis continues to dedicate her life hoping one-day to bridge the gap between Deaf & hearing  individuals through recreational activities, and the performing arts.

Executive Officer/ Performer

As a high school freshman, Brooke was ecstatic to learn her school offered ASL. Her teacher, Phyllis Gaines, mesmerized her with flying hands. Ms. Gaines love of music was naturally brought into the classroom and captured Brookes attention. Brooke quickly joined Sign of Da’ Times and began absorbing as much ASL and Deaf culture as she could, attending local silent dinners and community events. Phyllis took Brooke under her wing and became her mentor, teaching her the valuable skills needed beyond the classroom. Beloved as a second mom, Brooke credits Phyllis for her knowledge and passion for the Deaf community and promises to continue to carry the torch. Brooke is currently working on her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Dance Minor from Gallaudet University. She has dedicated her life to fullfilling the mission of Sign of Da' Times.

What is Performance Interpreting?

Music Performance interpreting is understanding and performing music in Sign Language meaningfully. Phyllis rethinks the concepts of interpretation by using rhythm and dance while focusing on expressing the true meaning behind the music.

Stand Out Performances

Sign of Da' Times has had the honor of performing on stage with Grammy award winner India.Arie at the House of Blues Orlando in 2013. We also have had the pleasure of performing for Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin twice! Check out our pics below!
